Its time for the big post about writer’s block! If you read many other blogs you may be rolling your eyes as you realise what this post is about. It seems that no blog can be called a blog if it doesn’t conform to very specific and unspoken rules. So here goes my attempt at conforming…
Earlier this week I was getting ready to pitch articles for Perdeby when I realised I had absolutely no ideas. None at all. Eventually with the help of my understanding editor, my sister, my friends and even strangers, and having gone through lists of weak and pointless ideas, we settled on a rather average one. I felt ashamed and useless, and felt that through my inability to think of a simple idea, I had forsaken the right to use words to create a meaningful sentence. It was a horrible experience that I wish upon no man (or woman).
Through this experience, I came to realise the importance of all these writer’s block posts I keep ignoring. They are there to help fellow writers get over the terrible feeling of having the creative pond run dry. They also let you know that you are not the only one suffering this illness.
When I got home that day, I read all the articles that I could find on writer’s block and running out of ideas. There are so many, and they all have different approaches to getting over it. Some are useful and some are silly, but at the end of it all I felt like my normal self once again.
So my advice: Just wait. It’s all you can do. Your abilities will come back, everybody has bad days and good days and time is the only true solution to the problem.
